ARE WE HONEST WITH UPCOMING & EMERGING YOUNG ARTISTS ?

There is nothing and no one doing anything for young upcoming & emerging artists. Is there anything that is being done to help young upcoming & emerging artists to promote them?

Thanks Hardik for starting a wonderful discussion. All the new & up coming artists complain that they are being ignored by the art community. But nobody listens to them. So instead of complaining why don't we ourselves help people like us? Let us start by forming a group & start working. Maybe we can lift ourselves up from this hole & others also along with us. All the best.

Artist Rahul Mukharjee has formed a group called 'The Hub" to help young and emerging talent. The Hub will provide much required platform and promote young artists. The Hub organised its first group show in Exhibition Hall, Faculty of Fine Arts, M S University of Baroda in the Month of October 08.This initiative is backed by a true art lover Mr. Premraj Rastogi of Conmat Industries (Baroda). He has been helping many young artists since years. Times of India, Baroda had carried an article on this initiative. I will post it in a day or two. I have find it from ToI's archives.

hi, this might seem slightly cynical but please bear with me...no offence to anyone.

We need to define 'young' - age?
upcoming - hasn't 'made it' yet?
emerging - has landed some good exhibitions, buy now before prices hit the roof?

I might make it in to one of these :-)

we need no help to be artists so let's say we are talking about exhibition opportunities+sales+media coverage+(the resulting) fame....

I do believe believe that huge talent with loads of perseverance and a dash of luck is all we need....(of course there is networking, connections etc) but usually they are by-products of talent, hardwork and 'luck' = being at the right place at the right time.

Even if someone were to focus fully on helping young and upcoming artists, how many could they help and how would they make a selection? Many artists do not appreciate being part of an 'open' platform - which is free for all...

We all need mentors - and you will find them - your talent will speak to someone in a position to take things further - someone who shares your aesthetic sense and to whom your art speaks.

Good luck!

Hi Hardik,
I have mentioned this in one of the previous discussions sometime ago.
Here in Washington DC, there is an event called Artomatic. It is for all artists and is run by artists. A core group of artist volunteers(who spend countless hours) work towards this event which attracts hundreds of artists and thousands of visitors.
Here is the way it works. First of all, there is no "They", only "We". All the participants(new, emerging or established artists) pay a sum of about $75 -$90 depending on the projected expenses for the show and are equally responsible for the event. Then they have to commit to 15 hours of volunteering which the individual artist can choose. The space is usually an office building that is in between leasing. The building is usually "rented" for 2-3 months and the show runs for about 6 weeks. The event is also supported by the local businesses as it boosts their business too with all the increased traffic. The event is very well advertised and attended. It attracts artists, art lovers, curators, gallery owners.
The individual artists gets a wall space of about 12'x8' or a similar sized installation area. They can display anything they want. They can have just one painting that says it all or fill in every inch of the wall. It is first come first served basis and gets filled up in the first 2-3 days of registration. It gets a lot of publicity and many artists have found their direction by making new contacts. The art work can be for sale or not and no commission for any sale. What more could you ask for?
The website is www.artomatic.org. I have participated in two of these events and got a lot of exposure for my art and also sold a few pieces.

you got to segregate two things.......

1....showcasing the work

2.... sales of the work during and after exhibition

while the first part is easy the second one causes heart aches on both sides if the things don't turn out to be economically viable.
let's face it the resources are very limited and to add insult to injury we have a very tough economic and financial scenario which is calling for tightening of the belts and in my opinion the promotional activity is going to nose dive for next 12 to 18 months as survival would be the key!
let's face it there are no free lunches in art world also thanks mainly to ever increasing number of artists as art was being percieved to be a successful and lucrative profession!

Hi, this is really hard question to answer
But if we take a positive look on Indian art scene, there are some organizations helping young artist to show case there work, giving scholarship to young artist or organizing art competitions
Some month ago we some friends discuss same problem about art development in central India. There is no organization or gallery in central India to promote contemporary young artist in central India. So we thought can we do something to encourage or support young artist
And answer comes and we launched scholarship for young artist living in central India in painting and also in sculpture. Giving details to you

Its only one scholarship which exclusively for artist from central India .
3 thousand per month for total 18 months scholarship program followed by exhibition.
And it’s in both field sculpture and in painting.

Painting and Sculpture - Scholarship Program -2009 - 2010.

We at Ayuda shilp help you find a platform to showcase your creativity. Provide financial support for an artist to evolve a new line of artwork which gives society a new dimension. Morally support to Boost Artist Artwork in Central India

I think every one doing something to help young artist
But we need more resource, more thinking on this and more open approach to this
And also as said in one comment we need to work like we not they
We need to start making one big organization who delivers all the info about art happenings, scholarships, exhibition details and opportunity in art field.
And I think we can definitely make this idea work
