Indian Art News

Any artist of the calibre of Husain in any other country in the world would be revered if not worshipped. It is shameful and downright pathetic that we do not have Husain in our midst on account of a handful of fundamentalists who wouldn't know the difference between a painting and a calendar and a poster. People who don't even own a passport, leave alone travelled to the Tate Modern, Guggenheim or MOMA and understand the meaning of art and the significance of artistic freedom of expression. I, and I think we all should condemn the politicians who have willed this misdemeanor and expose their shallow intentions for what they are really worth.

Very relevant. This is not about Husain but about our right of freedom and expression. There is always a delicate balance that needs to be maintained when dealing with secular, communal and religious issues but the position adopted by certain factions in India against the likes of MF Husain and unacceptable and a great loss to the nation. This is even more sad given the resurgence in the interest of Indian art.

At the same time one must also respect the sensitivities of certain people before we take actions in the public arena. I must qualify that this may not apply to an artist of the caliber and seniority of Husain who has brought great fame to Bharat.

Good news is coming on media that he will back home very soon. I always love his works, and happy to know he is coming.

Artistic freedom- what is freedom is it what ever we like we do, or is it a responsibility to do things on our own.

petty mindedness and art have to be separated and not used as a tool to get political mileage by indulging in sensational mind-less activities.

A loss to India of one of its talented artists, but also a blow to the responsible use of the right to the freedom of expression. A sad development, but not one which automatically whitewashes the deliberate demeaning of other religions through works such as the one with Sita and Hanuman. Wish that Hussain had risen to the occasion and made use of his considerable stature to apologise and destroy those works as an act of solidarity with the Hindus of India, among whom are also his greatest admirers.
We are all very vocal about appropriating all our rights and freedoms, but what about our duties and responsibilities?
