Coromandel Art Gallery opening exhibition with 7 artists, all with very different styles. This exhibition will give an idea of the future style of the gallery. Show from 15 Nov 2009 to 6 dec 2009.
Coromandel Art Gallery, is a new contemporary art gallery located in Pondicherry in South India. "Coromandel" is the name of the coast where Pondicherry is situated. Cholamandalam, the Tamil name for Coromandel, mean "land of the Cholas", and the Chola Dinasty was very good in art (architecture, sculpture, painting, bronze, literature). So, the choice of this name seemed an obvious fact.
The founder, Mr. Patrick Guicherd, a French man who travels in India since the 80’s, is very fond of the contemporary Indian art scene since he have seen "PTO" a solo exhibition of Jitish Kallat in 1997 Mumbai. Then he started to collect contemporary art from India, China and Southeast Asia. He also visited art fairs (Paris, Shanghai, Delhi, Singapore, Hong-Kong), Art Biennale (Lyon, Venice, Shanghai, New-York), artist’s workshops (Europe, India, China, South-East Asia) and participate in a lot contemporary art auctions.
He chose to open his gallery in Pondicherry because during his first trip in India, he fell in love with the city. Then, with his wife, Brigitte, they chose Pondicherry for their wedding in 2003. As they found the city pleasant, they decided to come back with their children and live there in 2008. Pondicherry has also a big history with France.
But it is mainly a strategic choice. Indeed, Pondicherry is located near two of the major cities of India: Bangalore and Chennai. Their inhabitants often come there to spend the weekend or some vacation days. Pondicherry is in Tamil Nadu, one of the largest industrial regions of India and more and more international companies come to settle there. In Pondicherry, there is also the most famous ashram in the world: Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Each year, thousands of visitors, from everywhere in the world, come to visit the ashram and the city.
Coromandel Art Gallery will have internationals relationships with artists, collectors, galleries, auctions houses, institutions, with taking part in arts fairs and others cultural events. The gallery will represent artists mainly from India and Southeast Asia and will give a large space for young and emerging artists. The gallery will also help artists to produce works, publish series limits, catalogs and various art projects.
